In Vitro Bioactivities of Extracts from Tomato Pomace

Abstract: Background: Tomato pomace (TP) is a coproduct generated by the extraction of tomato pulp, and is a potential source of bioactive molecules. In this study, we isolated several fractions from TP and evaluated their biological properties. Materials and Methods: TP was treated by maceration at room temperature with green solvents (ethanol, ethyl acetate, ethanol:water and ethanol:ethyl acetate) or supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2). The extracts were analyzed by HPLC-DAD to determine their composition, and their antioxid… Show more

“…Extracts of fresh tomato pomace prepared with ethanol, ethanol/ethyl acetate (1:1), and supercritical fluid extraction with CO 2 inhibited ZIKV infection up to 75% in a concentration-dependent manner, at 200 μg/mL, in A549 cells. These extracts act on the early stages of the viral cycle by blocking viral entry into the host cell [ 88 ].…”

“…carotenoids, tocochromanols, and unsaturated fatty acids). 11 Recently, Jamaleddine et al 12 applied SFE to obtain a lycopene-rich CE from tomato pomace, containing also polyphenols and tannins. This CE showed high antioxidant activity and high levels of cytotoxicity in HCT-116 colorectal cancer cells, suggesting the presence of synergy between some polar and non-polar molecules.…”
