This study investigated the protecting potential of Aqueous Guava (Psidium guajava) Leaf Extract (AGLE) against caffeine induced spermatotoxicity in albino rat models. Thirty healthy and sexually matured albino rats were divided into five groups of six rats each using a completely randomized design. They were treated with caffeine and AGLE combinations orally for 65 days. The result showed that caffeine significantly (p<0.05) reduced sperm viability, sperm count and sperm motility, while sperm head abnormality increased in caffeine treated rats when compared to the control. However, AGLE significantly (p<0.05) protected the treated albino rat models from caffeine induced spermatotoxicity in a dose-dependent manner. These results show that AGLE is effective in protecting albino rat models against caffeine induced spermatotoxicity in a dose dependent manner.

Antioxidants are compounds which play important roles in the prevention of many diseases by removing free radical intermediates and inhibit other oxidation reactions by being oxidized themselves. Dictyandra arborescens, a tropical plant, is locally used by natives of Mbaise, Imo State, Nigeria for the treatment of various ailments. Phytochemical analysis and in vitro antioxidant activities of parts of the plant were evaluated. Gas chromatography flame-ionization detector (GC-FID) was used to determine the phytochemicals present in the leaves and roots while in vitro antioxidant potentials of extracts of the leaves, stem and roots were determined by their abilities to scavenge 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), nitric oxide (NO), and hydrogen peroxide radicals (H2O2). Ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and total antioxidant capacity were also determined using standard methods. GC-FID analysis of the leaves and roots identified phytochemicals such as; rutin, ribalinidine, naringin, flavan-3-ol, epihedrine, sapogenin, spartein, flavonones, epicatechin, phytate, oxalate, naringenin, resveratol, quinine, catechin, lunamarin, kaempferol etc. Scavenging of the extracts were concentrationdependent. Activities of the extracts for DPPH, nitric oxide and H2O2 differed significantly (p˂0.05) from the standard antioxidant. Methanolic extract of D. arborescens roots showed the best reducing ability while methanolic extract of D. arborescensroot also showed the highest antioxidant activity (2352.94 ±164.87 mg AA/g extract). Findings showed that extracts of the leaves, and roots of D. arborescens were rich in phytoconstituents which could serve as potential sources of natural antioxidants. Antioxidant and therapeutic activities of this plant could therefore be linked to the synergy between the various phytochemicals.

The solvent of extraction determines the type and amount of phytochemicals extractible from a plant material. Reports have shown that numerous African herbs are rich is potent phytochemicals which have been used in folkloric and orthodox medicine in the prevention and treatment of ailments. This research is geared towards comparing the neuroprotective potency of the aqueous and methanolic extracts of Vernonia amygdalina on the cerebellum of mercury chloride intoxicated Wistar rats. Thirty adult male Wistar rats were divided into 6 groups of 5 rats each. Group A was the negative control and had food and water only. Group B was the positive control and was exposed to mercury chloride without treatment. Groups C1 and C2 received 200mg/kg bw of aqueous and methanolic extracts respectively while groups D1 and D2 received 400mg/kg bw of aqueous and methanolic extracts of Vernonia amygdalina respectively. Result of phytochemical analysis shows that water extracted more flavonoids while methanol extracted more phenols. The results of antioxidant studies show that the methanolic extract conferred more protection against oxidative stress than the aqueous extract. Histological results show that aqueous extract conferred more protection than the methanolic extract. We therefore conclude from our report that both the aqueous and methanolic extracts of Vernonia amygdalina confer neuroprotection on the cerebellum of Wistar rats.
