In vitro antileishmanial activity of trans-stilbene and terphenyl compounds

Abstract: h i g h l i g h t s g r a p h i c a l a b s t r a c tWe evaluated the leishmanicidal activity of a pool of new stilbene and terphenyl derivatives. Therphenyl 11 showed a leshmanicidal activity higher than pentostam and TTAS. Therphenyl 11 induces apoptosis in Leishmania parasites while saving macrophages and normal cells. Currently available drugs present different drawbacks, so there is an urgent need to develop new, safe and cost-effective drugs against leishmaniasis. In this study we tested a small library … Show more

“…The results showed that the piceatannol signi cantly increased the expression level of annexin-V compared to untreated control [25]. Another study on L. infantum promastigotes was shown that treatment of parasites with 10 µg/ml compound 3 (resveratrol derivate) for 48 h induced PS externalization suggesting that apoptosis activation is the cause of parasites death, while this compound has not shown apoptotic effects on macrophage cells [18]. Ferreira et al (2014) reported a 2.9-fold increase in the percentage of annexin Vpositive L. infantum promastigotes upon resveratrol treatment which suggests leishmanicidal activity of resveratrol [24].…”

“…Resveratrol represents Cis and Trans isomeric forms in nature that biological activity of it associated with Tran's form [17]. Despite several studies about the potential activity of resveratrol against both promastigotes and amastigotes of Leishmania parasites [18,19], associated studies with antileishmanial activity of resveratrol still is in its infancy. Moreover, resveratrol or analogues could also be a novel potential drug in leishmaniasis management and need to be further investigated in future.…”

“…The following compound, pinosylvin (3,5-dihydroxy-trans-stilbene), is the natural polyphenol, trans-stilbenoid found in heartwoods and leaves of Pinus sylvestris that possess numerous biological properties [72]. It is produced by plants as a secondary metabolite to protect against insects and microbes [79]. Pinosylvin exerts various biological activities, which are shown in Table 1.…”

“…Pinosylvin ( trans -3,5-dihydroxystilbene) is a plant secondary metabolite activated by microbes or insects that is biosynthesized through a general phenylalanine metabolic pathway in genus Pinus [ 125 , 126 ]. Although a pharmaceutically promising anti-antioxidant, anti-cancer, cardioprotective, anti-inflammatory, and chemopreventive substance, its original productivity from plants is very low [ 81 , 127 , 128 , 129 ].…”
