In vitro antibiotic susceptibility of preoperative normal conjunctival bacteria

Abstract: Purpose To determine the antibiotic susceptibility of preoperative conjunctival bacterial flora. Methods Antibiotic susceptibility of conjunctival bacterial strains isolated from 142 patients undergoing intraocular surgery was determined using the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion technique. v 2 statistical analysis was performed. Results Among the 116 bacteria isolated, 95 (82%) were coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS). Most (475%) of them were susceptible to vancomycin, minocycline, aminoglycosides, gatifloxacin,… Show more

“…Most particularly, methicillin-resistance involved 45% of the CNS strains, which is comparable to the 56% and 52% rates previously reported for endophthalmitis (8) and normal conjunctival samples [17,[18][19][20][21][22], respectively (Tables 1 and 2). A recent M A N U S C R I P T…”

“…Recent studies found that these are not an advantage in terms of reducing the rate of endophthalmitis [8,9]. However, since there is a rationale for their use (eliminating the bacterial conjunctival flora and reducing the pathogenicity of the surviving bacteria) [14,15], it is not surprising that according to the Green-Simms study [16], around 2/3 of the retinal specialists use them for IVT endophthalmitis prophylaxis.…”
