In vitro anti trypanosomal activity of some medicinal plants used in the treatment of trypanosomosis in Northern Nigeria

Abstract: The in vitro trypanocidal activity of 13 medicinal plants used by local herdsmen in Northern Nigeria for the treatment of trypanosomosis was investigated. Forty-four different extracts prepared from the 13 plants were screened for in vitro activity against Trypanosoma brucei brucei. Four of the extracts showed activity against the parasite at minimum concentration of 8.3 mg/ml of blood.

“…It is thus possible for any plants that did not show activity to a species of the parasite, thus can have activity against other species of the parasites. 1,40 Moreover, the result suggestive and similar with that reports that some plants had promising activity against trypanosomes. 2,15,20,48,49 The morphology of the blood cells was maintained while that of the parasites was affected when compared to the control that still had very active parasites.…”

“…Trypanosomosis is one of the major obstacles for livestock production in Africa, 1 and continues to cause morbidity and mortality on a large scale in the world. 2 The trypanosomes had been first reported to occur in trouts (Valentine, 1841) and frogs (Gluge, 1842), 3 but it was not until 1881 that Griffith Evans found trypanosomes in the blood of horses and camels with a wasting disease called Surra and suggested that the parasites might be the cause of this disease.…”

“…Seventeen plants have been studied previously against parasitic diseases as summarized in Table 1. The most common reports are against Plasmodium (Antoun et al, 2001;Andrade-Neto et al, 2004;Rodríguez et al, 2006;Kvist et al, 2006) and Trypanosoma (Gonzalez-Coloma et al, 2002;Talakal et al, 1995;Wurochekke & Nok, 2004) parasites. We did not find antiparasitic reports for three plants.…”

“…In Africa, herbal treatment has a long tradition and still holds a strong position in medical care. In Nigeria, traditional healers use medicinal plants either alone or in combination to treat both human and animal trypanosomosis (Wurochekke and Nok, 2004). Several reports exist on the herbal treatment of sleeping sickness (Asuzu and Chineme, 1990; Asuzu and Anaga, 1991; Wurochekke and Nok, 2004).…”
