Nature is a skilled factory that produces a wide variety of secondary metabolites known as natural products. Those compounds synthesized by living organisms are usually related to their vital processes. Many drugs used nowadays, had its origins in medicinal plants and other organisms such as herbs, fungi and sponges. Hence, those sources constitute a viable alternative to conventional medicine in many developing countries. In other hand, protozoan diseases like Chagas, represent a health threat causing mortality to populations around the world. The classic treatment for Chagas' disease is chemotherapic and includes benznidazole and nifurtimox, although, the search for new drugs still remains. Triatomines that may spread Chagas can also be controlled making use of the insecticide property of certain plants. After literature survey it was found, classes of natural products, plant extracts, essential oils, and other natural sources that have shown activity against T. cruzi. In this context, many substances were tested in vitro and in vivo assays to verify trypanocidal efficacy. Promising results were published regarding to compounds arising from plants and sponges that showed high toxicity on different forms of the parasite with low toxicity on mammalian cells, although few were clinically tested on Chagas' disease.

Historia del artículo ResumenObjetivo. Evaluar la actividad inmunoestimulante del extracto acuoso liofilizado (EAL) de la planta entera de Physalis angulata L. "bolsa mullaca". Materiales y métodos. Se usaron 32 ratas albinas divididas en cuatro grupos: agua destilada 3 mL (control); MetisopRinol (isoprinosine) 14,7 mg/kg; EAL Physalis angulata L. 8,6 mg/kg; y EAL Physalis angulata L. 17,2 mg/kg. El modelo de inmunoestimulación usado fue el de Delaveau et al. Se midió el porcentaje de linfocitos, neutrófilos segmentados; porcentaje de activación de la respuesta del sistema inmune (%ARSI) y absorbancia basal y a la 1 h, 3 h, 6 h y 24 h después de las intervenciones. Resultados. Se encontraron diferencias significativas en los valores de absorbancias cuando se realizó la comparación de todos los grupos de experimentación con el grupo control (p<0,001). Los grupos Physalis angulata 8,6 mg /kg y Physalis angulata 17,2 mg/kg presentaron sus %ARSI más altos a las seis horas de exposición (50,45 y 58,79% respectivamente). Los porcentajes de linfocitos y neutrófilos segmentados en los grupos isoprinosine 14,7 mg/kg, P. angulata 8,6 mg/kg, P. angulata 17,2 mg/kg fueron significativamente diferentes en comparación con los controles a las 3 h, 6 h y 24 h de intervención. Conclusiones. El EAL de Physalis angulata L, a dosis de 17,2 mg/kg mostró la mejor actividad inmunoestimulante, siendo quien más se acercó al efecto del isoprinosine 14,7 mg/kg. The objective of this research was to identify morphogenesis responses of in vivo and in vitro-derived explant of Physalis angulata L. Explants were cultured on MS medium containing 3% sucrose solidified with 1.3% agar supplemented with combination of 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP), indole acetic acids (IAA), naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). All explant types have morphogenesis ability. Capability for shoot regeneration was observed in high number of shoot tip (96.1%) and nodes explants (75.2%). Callus formation was dominantly produced by in vitro leaf explants. In vivo leaf had low responses for shoot/root regeneration and callus formation. These results provided an alternative choice of the explant suitable for either plant regeneration or callus formation.
