In vitro and in vivo evaluations of antioxidative, anti-Alzheimer, antidiabetic and anticancer potentials of hydroponically and soil grown Lactuca sativa

Abstract: Background Lactuca sativa is an edible plant commonly used by local communities to manage diabetes and stomach problems. Methods This work aimed to investigate the anti-oxidant, anticancer, antidiabetic and Anti-Alzheimer effects of hydroponically (HyL) and soil-grown (SoL) Lactuca sativa. Streptozotocin-induced diabetes and AlCl3-induced Alzheimer’s disease model was used to evaluate the medicinal effects of Lactuca sativa. … Show more

“…Serum Analysis. The serum obtained after centrifugation was analyzed according to the supplier's standard kits level using the Cobas® kits and standard protocols as reported previously [29,30]. The compounds analyzed included total serum protein, total serum bilirubin, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), serum creatinine, serum alanine transaminase (ALT), and serum aspartate transaminase (AST).…”

“…The study identifies bioactive constituents from methanol extracts such as phenols, flavonoids, oligosaccharides, coumarins and others that could be responsible for α-glucosidase inhibition/hypoglycemic activity. Recently, edible and hydroponically grown Lactuca sativa soil have been reported to substantially reduce blood glucose levels in diabetic rats besides in vitro α-glucosidase inhibition activity [ 63 ]. The crude extract and two isolated compounds Coniferol (1) and dillapiole (2) (from chloroform phyto-fractions) of Allium consanguineum were investigated for their hypoglycemic effects [ 64 ].…”

“…The composition of lettuce shows a very high water content (94–95%), which is what makes this vegetable a low-calorie food. In addition, lettuce contains minerals, vitamins, glycosylated flavonoids, phenolic acids, tocopherols, carotenoids, polyphenols, and sesquiterpene lactones [ 181 , 182 , 183 , 184 ]. The intake of lettuce is the basis of various healthy effects.…”
