In Vitro and In Vivo Comparison Study of Electrospun PLA and PLA/PVA/SA Fiber Membranes for Wound Healing

Abstract: Wound dressings can accelerate wound healing. The degradable polymer poly(lactic acid) (PLA) shows good mechanical properties and biocompatibility. Sodium alginate (SA) holds good biocompatibility, hemostasis, and high hygroscopicity. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) has good spinnability as a pharmaceutical excipient. Herein, we carried out a comparison study of electrospun PLA and PLA/PVA/SA fiber membranes for wound healing in vitro and in vivo. In this study, PLA and PLA/PVA/SA nanofiber membranes were fabricated… Show more

“…Any breach in the skin by wound causes invasion of microorganisms into the sensitive underneath tissues that lead to wound infection. The advanced research on wound dressing development suggests that the ideal wound dressing should provide a wet environment to the wound, absorb exudates from the wound, should be highly biocompatible, having good antimicrobial activity for quick tissue regeneration and mechanical features to remain intact [ 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 ].…”

“…A schematic of the homemade triaxial electrospinning system is given in Figure 1 . As all other types of electrohydrodynamic atomization (EHDA) processes such as coaxial electrospinning and electrospraying, triaxial electrospinning has the similar essential four parts, i.e., fluid-driven pump, high-voltage generator, collector, and spinneret [ 51 , 52 ]. What makes differences are the spinneret and the corresponding numbers of syringe pumps.…”

“…PLA is a biocompatible, biodegradable, and bioabsorbable aliphatic thermoplastic polyester with valuable thermo-mechanical properties. These features, in addition to its non-toxicity to the human body, make it a suitable candidate for use in bioengineering [6,26,31,162]. In some applications, such as medical implants, PLA stereocomplex has attracted growing attention.…”

“…In the case of non-compressible type of wounds, elasticity is another important requirement for a dressing to avoid wound compression. In addition, the wound dressing material should be soft, biocompatible, non-toxic, and non-allergenic [19,[26][27][28]. The effective healing process will improve by applying multifunctional wound dressings.…”
