In Vitro and in Planta Evaluation of Trichoderma asperellum TA as a Biocontrol Agent Against Phellinus noxius, the Cause of Brown Root Rot Disease of Trees

Abstract: Brown root rot (BRR), caused by the white rot fungus Phellinus noxius, is an epidemic disease of diverse broadleaved and coniferous tree species in many tropical and subtropical regions. Flooding and trenching control measures are difficult to implement, and chemical controls can have an adverse impact on ecosystems. Previous studies have provided in vitro evidence for the potential use of Trichoderma spp. for biocontrol of BRR. Here, we analyzed the in vitro antagonistic and mycoparasitic abilities of four Tr… Show more

“…Investigation of the interactions between Cosmospora and P. noxius by dual-culture, overlay, and cellulose and lignin utilization assays Two P. noxius isolates, 2248 (Chou et al, 2019) and B98 (Wu et al, 2009), and three Cosmospora sp. isolates, PDMORR1, PDEORR1, and PDEORR13, were used for dual-culture, overlay, and cellulose and lignin utilization assays.…”

“…For instance, T. koningii showed the highest growth inhibition of Rhizoctonia solani causing root rot in cotton, followed by T. viride, T. harzianum, and T. virens [34]. Similarly, T. asperellum showed effective antagonistic activity against the white-rot fungus Phellinus noxius, the causal agent of an epidemic brown root rot disease of various coniferous and broad-leaved tree species [35].…”

“…[14], Fusarium spp., Phytophthora sp., and Neopestalotiopsis rosae [37], and Trichoderma spp. [38] used in this study are listed in S1 Table . In addition to five species causing strawberry anthracnose (C. siamense, C. fructicola, C. karstii, C. miaoliense, and C. boninense) [14] and N. rosae, which causes strawberry leaf blight and crown rot [37], we isolated Botrytis sp. from strawberry fruit showing gray mold, Fusarium spp.…”
