In Vitro Activity of HR 756, a New Cephalosporin, Against Neisseria gonorrhoeae

Abstract: The in vitro activity of HR 756 was compared with penicillin, cefamandole, cefoxitin, and tetracycline against Neisseriagonorrhoeae. A total of 192 randomly selected isolates (of which 23 had minimal inhibitory concentrations of -0.5 jig/ ml for penicillin) and three (t-lactamase-producing isolates were tested. HR 756 was the most active antibiotic tested, with more than 90% of the isolates inhibited by 0.008 ,ug/ml and all inhibited by 0.25 ,ug/ml.Infection with Neisseria gonorrhoeae is the most commonly repo… Show more

“…gonorrhoeae, Haemophilus influenzae, Enterobacteriaceae, and many gram-negative nonfermentative bacilli, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa (2,4,(6)(7)(8)(9). The activity ofcefotaxime against P. aeruginosa is particularly imnportant, because aminoglycoside-resistant organisms have become serious problems in many hospitals.…”

“…and has activity in vitro against aminoglycoside-resistant gram-negative rods (10, 11, 15; Hamilton, Engle and Schleupner, manuscript in preparation). Additionally, for both beta-lactamase-positive and negative strains of H. influenzae and N. gonorrhoeae, cefotaxime has been shown to be much more active than currently available cephalosporins and, with the exception of Bacteroides fragilis, is at least equivalent to other cephalosporins in its anaerobic spectrum of activity (1,4,11,12,16,18).…”

“…It was noted to be more active than a variety of other antimicrobial agents in vitro on a per-weight basis (8). The minimum inhibitory concentration of cefotaxime remained the same (c0.004 jLg/ml) whether 8-lactamase was produced or not (1).…”
