In vitro activity of antifungal and antiseptic agents against dermatophyte isolates from patients with tinea pedis

Abstract: The in vitro activity of antifungal and antiseptic agents were evaluated against dermatophytes isolated from patients with tinea pedis. The antifungals studied were: ciclopirox olamine, cetoconazole, tolciclate and terbinafine, and the antiseptics were: povidine iodine (PVPI), propolis, Fungol®, Andriodermol®, and boric acid. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) or the minimal dilution concentration (MDC) was determined by an agar dilution method using modified yeast nitrogen agar base, and the minimum f… Show more

“…Propolis is a very complex mixture and, in general, it is composed of 50% balsams and resins, 30% wax, 10% essential oils, 5% pollen and 5% of various other substances like sugars, vitamins, etc (16,30). Bees modify propolis by -glucodiases, Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the in vitro antimicrobial activity of ethanol extract of propolis from…”

“…2 However, the appearance of resistant fungi established the need to research different therapy alternatives and action sites. 3 Terbinafine is among the drugs that have an action mechanism different from that of azoles. It belongs to the family of alilamines, acts on the epoxidase enzyme of the fungal cell and is especially indicated to treat skin infections caused by dermatophytes.…”

“…4 Contrary to imidazoles, terbinafine has an antifungal action. 1,2,3 Terbinafine is more selective for the fungal cell than amphotericin B, a standard antifungal agent, due to a difference between the epoxidase enzymes of mammals and fungi. 5 Terbinafine can be administered in combination with other drugs and presents mild toxic effects or adverse reactions.…”
