“…Certain dioxins are reported to cause developmental dental defects in rodents (Alaluusua et al, 1993;Kattainen et al, 2001;Kiukkonen et al, 2002;Lukinmaa et al, 2001;Sahlberg et al, 2002) and children (Alaluusua et al, 1996(Alaluusua et al, , 1999Holtta et al, 2001). Such defects in children are of concern be-cause they occur at low-dose levels and are usually permanent (Kattainen et al, 2001). This study describes developmental maxillary incisor defects in female Sprague-Dawley rats treated for 13 weeks with HCB.…”

“…This result differs from those of other studies, which show that lactating pups frequently lacked third molars when administered a single dose of 50 or 1000 mg/kg TCDD at PND1 or when pregnant dams were exposed to 1 mg/kg TCDD on gestation day 15. 22,7 We suggest two reasons to explain the difference between these studies and ours as follows: First, TCDD administered at 5 mg/kg may be insufficient to arrest the development of the third molar. Second, TCDD was administered too late to induce molar agenesis.…”

“…The detrimental effect of TCDD on tooth development has been well demonstrated (Alaluusua et al, 1993;Kattainen et al, 2001), so it is surprising that we failed to detect changes in molar size and shape with TCDD exposure. Perhaps the date of dosing used in this study was less suitable for causing detectable changes in overall molar size and shape than it was for mandible traits (Allen and Leamy, 2001;Miettinen et al, 2002).…”
