In the Land of Nagar: a survey around Tell Brak

Abstract: During the campaign at Tell Brak in the spring of 1988 the present authors conducted a survey of tells in the vicinity of the site. Although comprehensive, the work was primarily intended to supplement the 1978 survey by K. Fielden, who investigated the sites surrounding the main tell at Brak itself and those on the lower Jaghjagh between the junction with the Wadi Radd and the modern town of Hassake, with a particular view to fourth and third millennium settlement (Fielden 1978/9).Within a rectangle of c. 170… Show more

“…To assess archaeological sites and hollow ways used in this study, we conducted a comprehensive review, standardization, and synthesis of settlement data from reports and gazetteers of archaeological surveys carried out in the KT (see Meijer 1986;Wilkinson and Tucker 1995;Eidem and Warburton 1996;Lyonnet 2000;Ristvet 2005;Wright et al 2006Wright et al -2007Ur and Wilkinson 2008;and Ur 2010a, b; see Table 1 and Fig. 2).…”

“…The proximity of surveys allows a wider area to be assessed, which will help us to understand whether the regional interactions noticed in Southern Mesopotamia are similar to what occurred in Northern Mesopotamia. This case study's data derive from the settlement surveys highlighted in Figure 4.1(2) (Meijer 1986;Eidem and Warburton 1996;Lyonnet 2000;Ristvet 2005;Wright, Rupley, Ur, Oates and Ganem 2007;Ur and Wilkinson 2008;Ur 2010;Ur, Karsgaard and Oates 2011).…”

“…Wilkinson and Tucker 1995;Ur 2010). While this does not represent the entire Khabur Triangle, much of the region appears to show developments comparable to these two areas (Meijer 1986;Eidem and Warburton 1996;Lyonnet 2000). In general, as in the Iron Age, sites are small in the later AoE periods.…”

“…Fielden's observations were expanded in a reconnaissance by Eidem and Warburton (1996). Important geoarchaeological studies of the site and its immediate hinterland were conducted in 1991-93 (Wilkinson et al 2001).…”

“…Building on several earlier reconnaissance and extensive surveys (Fielden 1978-79;Meijer 1986;Eidem and Warburton 1996;Lyonnet 2000), the Tell Brak Sustaining Area Survey examined sites and landscape features in a twenty-kilometre radius around Tell Brak (see preliminary reports in Wright et al 2006-7;Oates 2005: 28-35). As a complement to this project, the Brak Suburban Survey undertook an intensive surface examination of Brak itself.2 Our goal was to reconstruct the history of settlement on the site, with a particular focus on the chronology and spatial patterning of its urban phases.…”
