In situ synthesis of silver nanoparticles on densely amine‐functionalized polystyrene: Highly active nanocomposite catalyst for the reduction of methylene blue

Abstract: In this contribution, polystyrene (PS) bearing nitrogen-rich ligands as chelation moieties for both Ag + ions and Ag (0) nanoparticles was prepared through successive chemical modifications of native PS including nitration (treatment with HNO 3 / H 2 SO 4 ), reductive amination (treatment with SnCl 2 /HCl), Michael addition of methyl acrylate, and grafting of ethyelenediamine. The as-synthesized PS derivative was further used to support silver nanoparticles through initial chelation of the silver nanoparticle … Show more

“…Experimentally, linear PS were submitted to nitration and subsequent reduction of the intermediate nitrocompound to afford amino-functionalized polystyrenes. Amino groups were then modified using either a chlorine-bearing triazine [ 50 ] or methyl acrylate [ 51 ]. Regarding the triazine modification, 2-aminothiazole was further added to the modified PS, so as to chelate gold ions, which were further reduced into their respective NPs through the use of a reducing chemical.…”

“…Polystyrene nanocomposites with the desired properties can also be obtained resulting, for example, in improving its thermal stability and reducing its well‐known flammability [10] . Moreover, PS derivatives were used to prepare AgNPs and the obtained compound was a very active nanocomposite material, which had catalytic activity, as confirmed by its reduction reaction of methylene blue [11] . The PS‐metformin/CuCl 2 complex has an antibacterial activity and can be used at the same time as a recyclable nanocatalyst for the N‐arylation of indole and aniline.…”

“…Other modified polyamines with hydrophobic backbone have been paid more and more attention. An aminated styrene was afforded by the process of nitration, reduction, Michael addition, aminolysis reactions [10]. The obtained amino-styrene was employed as a template for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles.…”
