In‐situ plasma treatment of tomato and rice seeds in‐liquid to promote seed germination and seedling growth

Abstract: We propose an in-liquid plasma technique-Solution Plasma (SP)-to help enhance seed germination. Tomato and rice seeds are selected as representatives for dicot and monocot plant seeds, respectively. The effect of SP treatment time on the seed surface's chemical morphology and wettability is investigated. Compared to the untreated seeds, surface erosion of both seeds is observed. The surface wettability is also enhanced. The SP helps improve the seed germination rate and seedling growth of both seeds. We present… Show more

“…In addition, a broad band associated with COO-antisymmetric stretching C=O at 1632 cm −1 was assigned to free carbonyl groups, carboxylate, amide, and phenolic compounds. Finally, the peak appearing at 1546 cm −1 was related to lignin and phenolic ring/backbone due to the aromatic C=C vibration [73][74][75].…”

“…Plasma provides a comprehensive environment for optical, electrical, magnetic and active particles 12 . It is widely used in botany, and plasma technology can reduce crop seed pollution, improve the storage quality of fruits and vegetables, promote seed germination, improve seed vigour, and increase crop yields 13–17 . Chou et al 18 suggested that plasma treatment can promote the germination rate of plant seeds and seedling growth.…”

[13][14][15][16][17] Chou et al 18 suggested that plasma treatment can promote the germination rate of plant seeds and seedling growth. It has been reported to have the potential to improve the biomass and edible quality of soybean sprouts.…”

“…Atmospheric pressure air dielectric barrier discharges (DBDs) are widely utilised in generating the non-thermal plasma for various applications, including gas purification and conversion [1][2][3], active flow control [4][5][6], plasma medicine [7][8][9], and seed germination [10][11][12]. Due to the presence of a dielectric, the DBD reactor is powered by either the pulse [13] or alternative current (AC) power [14].…”
