In Situ Monitoring of the Long-Term Settlement of High-Fill Subgrade

Abstract: Monitoring the settlement of high-fill subgrade plays a significant role in maintaining the service quality of highways. To investigate the postconstruction settlement of high-fill subgrade under gravity stress and vehicle loads, in situ monitoring was carried out on the Lanzhou-Yongjing highway. Single-point settlement meters were buried in various depths under the driveway and road shoulder. The evolution of settlement with time and space was analyzed. The results show that the settlement of the road shoulde… Show more

“…Almost two-year settlement data are obtained from the embankment after construction. And the fieldmeasurement settlement data during construction is obtained from [28], which monitored the settlement of each layer of the filling during the construction, and the relationship between filling height and settlement of the filling during construction is represented in Figure 6. And from the monitored data during construction in Figure 6, firstly, the value of T r is obtained from equation 57, secondly, substituting the value of T r and all the monitored parameters into equation 58to calculate the value of R, thirdly, the values of T r and R are substituted into equation (59) to get the value of E H , and finally, the creep settlement of every layer of the embankment is calculated from equations (42) and (55), respectively, which are presented in Figures 7 and 8.…”

“…Improper treatment of high-fill subgrades will have a large impact on the road quality and driving comfort and may lead to engineering problems [1][2][3]. Therefore, monitoring subgrade engineering, through multiple means, is of the utmost importance for the ensured stability of these high-fill subgrades [4]. However, there is no unified standard method for safety risk assessment of high-fill subgrade, and different evaluation methods yield different conclusions, resulting in an unscientific classification of engineering risk levels.…”

“…Based on the typical geological parameters of the Nanjing metrostation excavation, Li and Yan [8] numerically simulated ground surface settlements in auxiliary planes perpendicular and parallel to the excavation and in angled auxiliary planes at the excavation corner and nally developed an estimation method for building settlements. Jia et al [9] investigated the postconstruction settlement of high-ll subgrade under gravity stress and vehicle loads and monitored the Lanzhou-Yongjing highway in situ. ey analyzed the evolution of settlement with time and space, and the results show that the settlement of road shoulder is greater than that of driveway; the settlement of subgrade increases with time and tends to be stable after one year.…”
