In-situ investigations on small-scale local and short-term changes of sublittoral macrobenthos in Lübeck Bay (western Baltic Sea)

Abstract: In-situ studies on sublittoral soft bottom macrofauna (depth: 14-16 m) employing the underwater laboratory (UWL) "Helgoland" were carried out. Sets of samples were compared for small-scale local and short-term changes in species richness, faunal abundance, numerical dominance, diversity, evenness, homogeneity, and similarity. It could be shown that minor differences in sediment quality can cause conspicuous heterogeneity within a small sampling area (diameter: ca. 100 m). Both spatfalt and mortality of benthic… Show more

“…Between 1962 and 1968 two living specimens of N. reticulatus were found by Schulz (1969aSchulz ( , 1969b in the Kadet Trench, which were the last records of this species in the Mecklenburg Bight for several decades. In numerous exhaustive macrozoobenthos surveys during the period from 1969 to 1996, no individuals of N. reticulatus were found (e.g., Rogal et al, 1978;Al-Hissni, 1989;Rumohr, 1993;Voigt et al, 1994;Prena et al, 1997). Based on these clear results, there is a high probability that since the end of the 1960s N. reticulatus had died out in the area.…”

If relationships between the fauna and these fine-scale environmental attributes are being studied, the precise positioning of samples becomes important .…”
