Metal−organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent−organic frameworks (COFs) are promising precursors for preparing high-performance carbonaceous materials for capacitive deionization (CDI). However, the simple pyrolysis of single MOFs or COFs usually leads to carbonaceous materials with disadvantages in salt adsorption capacity (SAC) and cycling stability, which are unfavorable to the further development of CDI. To address this issue, herein, we report the directed core−shell motif hybridization of COFs on MOFs to obtain selectively functionalized carbonaceous precursors, NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) @TP-DQ COF, which then produce titanium dioxide nanoparticle-embedded nitrogenrich carbon architectures, called TiO 2 @COF, via pyrolysis. It is evidently expected that the resulting TiO 2 @COF possesses several advantageous features: (1) the inner core, which contains titanium dioxide nanoparticles, provides abundant faradic active sites for ion accommodation contributing additionally to the high SAC; (2) the outer capacitive shell, which is fibrous nitrogen-rich carbon, not only protects the inner core from the harsh environment of the solution and stabilizes the cycling performance but also affords plentiful nitrogen dopants for enhanced pseudocapacitive capacity and abundant pores for ion adsorption and electrolyte permeation; and (3) the outer COF-derived fibers interconnect with each other, giving rise to increasing electrical conductivity. As a result, TiO 2 @COF delivers a high SAC of 33.66 mg g −1 and favorable cycling stability over 40 cycles, significantly exceeding those of CDI electrodes derived from single MOFs or COFs. This work is expected to enrich the construction of selectively functionalized carbonaceous particles from MOFs and COFs and may also endow multiple promising applications of core−shell motif hybrids.

Summary A significant interest in the exploration of clean and renewable alternative energy resources has been observed in recent years to combat environmental pollution and energy shortages for a sustainable future. In this regard, hydrogen is clean, energy‐rich fuel with unlimited potential. It can be produced via water‐splitting process using the most abundant resources on earth, that is, water and solar/electrical energy. Metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) are a category of porous crystalline materials with well‐organized structures and unique catalytic, optical, and electrical properties. MOFs and MOF‐derived materials have proved to be excellent catalysts for water‐splitting both by electrochemical and photoelectrochemical (PEC) routes. Furthermore, photochemical and electrochemical capabilities of these MOFs can be fine‐tuned to maximize their performance by modification in the bandgap, surface area, current density, electrochemical active surface area, and overpotential, through tailoring of the organic ligands and/or metal centers. A number of works have been dedicated to this quest resulting in promising and very effective results. Such as for photoelectrocatalysis, a composite nanorod array of TiO2/Co‐MOF acting as photoanode achieved one of the highest photocurrent densities of 2.93 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V (vs reverse hydrogen electrode [RHE]). In another study, MOF‐derived Co3C‐3/TiO2 photoanode attained the photocurrent density of 2.6 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V vs RHE. For electrocatalysis, Fe2O3/Ni‐MOF‐74 exhibited oxygen evolution reaction overpotential of 264 mV to reach 10 mA/cm2 of current density with a low Tafel plot of 48 mV/dec. Another novel material derived from MOF, MoO2‐PC‐rGO displayed a Tafel Plot of 41 mV/dec. Even though this field is in its infancy phase, it is attracting increased attention for promising results suggesting extraordinary potential for practical applications. Focus of this review article is on the overview of the development of MOFs for application in electrocatalytic and photoelectrocatalytic water‐splitting for hydrogen production. This review intends to provide a timely reference and insight for the advancement in catalysts based on MOFs for practical electrochemical and PEC water‐splitting in a clear and comprehensive manner. Starting with the brief introduction, fundamentals, factors affecting catalytic efficiency and evaluation parameters of water‐splitting are summarized followed by synthesis strategies and recent progress made by MOF‐based catalysts for PEC and electrochemical water‐splitting.

Fast‐Switching Speed and Ultralong Lifespan Au/Prussian Blue Electrochromic Film for Iris Devices Applications

Prussian Blue (PB) is an excellent electrochromic (EC) material, possessing many praiseworthy advantages such as proper redox potential, large transmittance, environmental benignity, neutral colored state, and low cost. However, the co‐influence of weak interaction force and low electrical conductivity results in poor cyclic stability and slow switching speed. In this work, the novel Pt/Au and Au/PB films are prepared by electrodeposition to improve the EC properties of PB. The introduction of Au and Pt nanoparticles not only enhances the conductivity and inhibits polarization, but also increases the contact area and alleviates the stress and strain caused by volume expansion during ion insertion/extraction. Furthermore, the Pt/PB and Au/PB heterojunction with a strong inner electronic field promote the separation of electrons and holes and quicken charge transfer. In consideration of the better electrical conductivity, higher transmittance and strong local plasma resonance effect of Au nanoparticles, the Au/PB film shows ultrastable EC cyclic stability (96.4% after 2000), fast coloration/bleaching switching time (1.36/2.32 s), small charge transfer resistance (38.2 Ω), and high coloration efficiency (131.3 cm2 C−1). In addition, the EC iris devices are designed and assembled using Au/PB film as an EC layer to confirm the feasibility of the material in digital cameras and mobile phones.
