In Situ High-Pressure Synthesis of New Outstanding Light-Element Materials under Industrial P-T Range

Abstract: High-pressure synthesis (which refers to pressure synthesis in the range of 1 to several GPa) adds a promising additional dimension for exploration of compounds that are inaccessible to traditional chemical methods and can lead to new industrially outstanding materials. It is nowadays a vast exciting field of industrial and academic research opening up new frontiers. In this context, an emerging and important methodology for the rapid exploration of composition-pressure-temperature-time space is the in situ me… Show more

“…The paper by LeGodec and Courac describes the various designs of multianvil presses in detail. [ 132 ] Zhou et al, used a UHP cubic cell (with WC anvils) and direct AC heating for the sintering of fine‐grained tungsten and molybdenum. A pressure of 9 GPa and a temperature of 1200–1300 °C only enabled full densification of these refractory materials.…”

“…However, until now there has been no device for in situ monitoring of SPS processes. For this reason, we developed a compact very high-pressure SPS [ 52 ] on the base of a Paris–Edinburgh press, which is specially designed for in situ measurements on large facilities [ 22 ]. Indeed, the press and the pulsed current heating unit (described in section II-4) can be installed in one hour on a synchrotron beamline ( Figure 17 ).…”

“…Finally, in chemistry and materials science, high-pressure studies can allow the synthesis of new compounds with exceptional properties, which are usually impossible to synthesize under the usual conditions of atmospheric pressure. Indeed, following historical studies on the high-pressure synthesis of diamond and then of cubic boron nitride in the 20th century, the most recent discoveries concern a wide range of new strategic materials which can have exceptional mechanical, energetic, magnetic, optical or thermoelectric properties, making it possible to consider important technological applications [ 22 ].…”

“…It is also an obstacle to understanding the mechanism of functional properties of Ni−B compounds. 9 Hence, it is urgent to synthesize single phases of Ni−B compounds to further uncover a new kind of functional material.…”

“…There is still a lack of data on the intrinsic properties of Ni–B compounds, such as conductivity and hardness. It is also an obstacle to understanding the mechanism of functional properties of Ni–B compounds . Hence, it is urgent to synthesize single phases of Ni–B compounds to further uncover a new kind of functional material.…”
