In Situ Fabrication of a Superhydrophobic ORMOSIL Coating on Wood by an Ammonia–HMDS Vapor Treatment

Abstract: A superhydrophobic ORMOSIL (organically modified silicate) coating was in situ fabricated on a wood surface by ammonia-hexamethylisilazane (HMDS) vapor treatment. The wood was immerged in tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), and then the TEOS absorbed on the wood surface was hydrolyzed and condensed to hydrophobic SiO 2 nanoparticles with ammonia and HDMS vapor treatment. The effect of the treatment temperature and time on the hydrophobicity of wood was investigated. At a treatment temperature of 50 • C, a superhydrophob… Show more

“…Organically modified silicates (ORMOSILs) are hybrid silicon xerogels that combine the mechanical, thermal, and structural rigidity and stability of inorganic materials with the flexibility and functionality of organic molecules [ 1 ]. These properties favor their utilization as chemical and optical sensors [ 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 ], catalysts [ 8 , 9 ], coatings [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ], chromatographic agents [ 15 , 16 ], nanoprobes, and photovoltaic cells [ 17 , 18 ], among others.…”

“…The hydrophobization of the micro-/nanoscale architecture could also be achieved by replacing the resins with low surface free energy components [113][114][115][116][117][118][119][120][121][122][123][124][125][126][127][128][129][130][131][132]. As a general rule, these coatings showed superhydrophobicity (contact angle > 150 • , roll-off angle < 10 • ), high resistance to mechanical wear (abrasion, cutting, etc.…”

“…These methods were adopted in different publications presented in this review to improve the characteristics of the wood surfaces, such as mechanical properties, thermal stability, dimensional stability and resistance to biodegradation. They were particularly prevalent to cast inorganic [115][116][117][118]121,122,132,147,148,150,151,153,154,[156][157][158][160][161][162][163][164][165][166]170,172] and organicinorganic composite [87,88,103,[105][106][107][109][110][111][112][113][114][125][126][127][129][130][131][134][135][136][137]…”

“…Organically modified silicon xerogels (ORMOSILs) are attracting considerable interest for their application in new-generation technologies, being utilized in chemical and optical sensors [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ], for catalysis [ 4 , 5 ], in coatings [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ], for chromatography [ 11 , 12 ], and in pharmacy [ 13 ]. They have great chemical versatility and can be efficiently modified for specific applications due to their combination of highly varied mechanical, optical and textural properties [ 14 ].…”
