The stability of marine methane hydrates and the potential release of methane gas to the ocean and atmosphere have received considerable attention in the past decade. Sophisticated hydraulic‐thermodynamic models are increasingly being applied to investigate the dynamics of bottom water warming, hydrate dissociation, and gas escape from the seafloor. However, these models often lack geomechanical coupling and neglect how overpressure development and fracture propagation affect the timing, rate, and magnitude of methane escape. In this study we integrate a geomechanical coupling into the widely used TOUGH + Hydrate model. It is shown that such coupling is crucial in sediments with permeability ≤10−16 m2, as fracture formation dramatically affects rates of dissociation and seafloor gas release. The geomechanical coupling also results in highly nonlinear seafloor gas release, which presents an additional mechanism for explaining the widely observed episodic nature of gas flares from seafloor sediments in a variety of tectonic and oceanographic settings.

Anthropogenic oil in the ocean is of great concern due to its potential immediate and long-term impacts on the ecosystem, economy, and society, leading to intense societal efforts to mitigate and reduce inputs. Sources of oil in the ocean (in the order of importance) are natural marine seepage, run-off from anthropogenic sources, and oil spills, yet uncertainty and variability in these budgets are large, particularly for natural seepage, which exhibits large spatial and temporal heterogeneity on local to regional scales. When source inputs are comparable, discriminating impacts is complicated, because petroleum is both a bioavailable, chemosynthetic energy source to the marine ecosystem and a potential toxic stressor depending on concentration, composition, and period of time. This synthesis review investigates the phenomena underlying this complexity and identifies knowledge gaps. Its focus is on the Coal Oil Point (COP) seep field, arguably the best-studied example, of strong natural marine hydrocarbon seepage, located in the nearshore, shallow waters of the Northern Santa Barbara Channel, Southern California, where coastal processes complicate oceanography and meteorology. Many of our understandings of seep processes globally are based on insights learned from studies of the oil and gas emissions from the COP seep field. As one of the largest seep fields in the world, its impacts spread far as oil drifts on the sea surface and subsurface, yet much remains unknown of its impacts.

Characterization of mud volcanoes in the northern Zhongjiannan Basin, western South China Sea

Mud volcanoes are important to understand hydrocarbon research and exploration, crustal movement and neotectonic activity, geological engineering, and climate change. They are widely distributed along the Alps-Tethys suture zone, the Pacific belt, and continental slopes. Previous detailed studies on mud volcanoes concentrated mostly on onshore areas. Recent developments in geophysical technology have opened vast deepwater areas for research on mud volcanoes. Based on multibeam bathymetry, multichannel seismic reflection, gravity, and magnetics data, mud volcanoes in the northern Zhongjiannan Basin have been studied comprehensively and systematically. Abundant mud volcanoes were found in the whole Northern Depression of the basin, not only in the Zhongjian Valley but also in the Rizhao Valley, with different sizes, morphologies, and eruption intensities. Five types of mud volcanoes are identified in the study area, which include the following: deep source high-energy large-size mud volcanoes, shallow source lowenergy small-size mud volcanoes, budding mud volcanoes (mud diapir), mud volcanoes related to canyon and bottom current channels, and mud volcanoes related to pockmarks and gas chimneys. At the developmental scale, the distribution and type of mud volcanoes (diapirs) in the Zhongjiannan Basin are obviously different than those in the Yinggehai Basin, which is famous for the development of a large number of large mud diapirs in the North-western South China Sea. The region's tectonic and sedimentary environment is the main controlling factor of the development of mud volcanoes. Three sets of Tertiary thick mudstones in the Zhongjiannan Basin are the material basis for the formation of mud volcanoes. Overpressured fluid, generated from the combined factors of undercompaction, hydrocarbon generation, hydrothermal pressurization,and tectonic compression, is the driving force of the eruption of mud volcanoes. Furthermore, earthquakes that occurred in the surrounding areas of the Zhongjiannan Basin are the triggering mechanism of mud volcano eruptions.
