Charge-charge, current-current, and Raman correlation functions are derived in a consistent way using the unified response theory. The theory is based on the improved description of the conduction electron coupling to the external electromagnetic fields, distinguishing further the direct and indirect ͑assisted͒ scattering on the quasistatic disorder. The two scattering channels are distinguished in terms of the energy and momentum conservation laws. The theory is illustrated on the Emery three-band model for the normal state of the underdoped high-T c cuprates which includes the incoherent electron scattering on the disorder associated with the quasistatic fluctuations around the static antiferromagnetic ͑AF͒ ordering. It is shown, for the first time consistently, that the incoherent indirect processes dominate the low-frequency part of the Raman spectra, while the long-range screening which is dynamic removes the long-range forces in the A 1g channel. In the mid-infrared frequency range the coherent AF processes are dominant. In contrast to the nonresonant B 1g response, which is large by itself, the resonant interband transitions enhance both the A 1g and B 1g Raman spectra to comparable values, in good agreement with experimental observation. It is further argued that the AF correlations give rise to the mid-infrared peak in the B 1g Raman spectrum, accompanied by a similar peak in the optical conductivity. The doping behavior of these peaks is shown to be correlated with the linear doping dependence of the Hall number, as observed in all underdoped high-T c compounds.

The electron-mediated coupling of external electromagnetic fields and Raman-active oscillations is derived for a general electronic model with multiple bands using the adiabatic approach and the explicit diagrammatic approach. The theory is illustrated on the quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) quarter-filled charge-density-wave (CDW) model. It is shown how the long-range Coulomb forces and the single-electron relaxation processes affect the Raman spectroscopy of the amplitude-oscillation mode in clean CDW systems. It is also argued that the adiabatic treatment of the photon-phonon coupling functions can be safely used in this case.

The gauge invariant, two-component optical conductivity model, with a correlation gap structure related to the umklapp scattering processes, is applied to the quasi-one-dimensional electronic systems and compared to the recent measurements on the Bechgaard salt (TMTSF)2PF6. The optical response of both the insulating and metallic state is found for the half-filled conduction band, depending on the ratio between the correlation energy scale 2∆ 0 2 and the transfer integral in the direction perpendicular to the conducting chains, t b ′ . The estimated value 2∆ 0 2 /t b ′ agrees reasonably well with the previous experimental and theoretical conclusions. Parallel to the chains the thermally activated conduction electrons in the insulating state are found to exhibit an universal behaviour, accounting for the observed single-particle optical conductivity of the ordered ground state of charge-density-wave systems. The band parameters and the related damping energies suitable to the normal metallic state of (TMTSF)2PF6 are estimated from the measured spectra. Not only the spectral weights but also the damping energies clearly indicate an opening of the correlation gap in the charge excitation spectrum.
