Inclinometer probes are used to measure ground movement. While an industry standard, this technology has drawbacks, including costly trips for manual measurements, operator error, and limited measurements due to casing deformation. Relatively new to the industry, MEMS-based in-place inclinometers (M-IPIs) are composed of a series of MEMS accelerometer segments separated variously by flexible joints or field-connection systems, and encased in watertight housing.M-IPIs provide nearly continuous ground movement measurements without frequent field trips, accommodate greater ground movement due to their flexibility, and may contain temperature sensors, useful for frozen ground applications. Since MIPIs have not been evaluated fully for use in cold regions, two M-IPIs from different manufacturers were installed in an area of known slope instability within permafrost in southcentral Alaska. Each M-IPI was evaluated for ease of installation and subsequent retrieval, durability, and functionality in frozen ground. M-IPI ground movement data and temperature measurements were compared to those obtained using an inclinometer probe and thermistor string, respectively. All instruments indicate ground movement at a depth of approximately 16.8 m (55 ft). Measurements from both devices compare well to those from the inclinometer probe, with measurements of the same casing differing less than 1.8 mm (6.9x10 -2 in.) and measurements of two adjacent casings differing less than 3.8 mm (0.15 in.). Temperature data analysis indicates that the M-IPI devices measured temperatures within ~0.2C (0.4F) of those recorded by the thermistor string. If used to measure both ground movement and temperature in frozen ground, the M-IPI temperature sensors should be calibrated.

Abstract-China has complex terrain where landslide happens very frequently, thus leading to serious damages sometimes. So in China much attention is paid to the monitoring of landslide. There are various methods in landslide monitoring all over the world. Bas1200ed on the analysis on previous landslide monitoring instruments, this paper designs a new kind landslide monitoring system, which Chuan Wu, Wen-qiao Wang, Guo-jun Wen and Xiao-ming Wu, MULTIPLE PARAMETER MONITORING SYSTEM FOR LANDSLIDE 1201 can monitor three parameters of different depth at a time: internal displacement, internal geotechnical pressure and pore water pressure. The system consists of three parts: mechanical structure, monitoring system and PC software. In this system the data collected by sensors are firstly stored in the SD card, and the user will be able to read the monitoring data at regular intervals instead of monitoring data changing timely, which can save labor, especially at the initial stage of landslide. At last laboratory testing has been done to verify the accuracy of this measuring system and the result satisfies the design requirements.

Inclinometer probes are an industry standard for measuring ground movement; however, this technology has drawbacks, including costly trips for manual measurements, operator error, and limited measurements caused by casing deformation. Relatively new in-place inclinometers based on microelectromechanical systems (M-IPIs) consist of microelectromechanical systems accelerometer segments separated variously by flexible joints or field connection systems and encased in a watertight housing. M-IPIs provide nearly continuous ground movement measurements, accommodate greater ground movement because of their flexibility, and may contain temperature sensors, useful for applications in frozen ground. Two M-IPIs from different manufacturers were evaluated at four research sites in Alaska (a) to monitor creep in frozen ground (vertical installation), (b) to identify and monitor a slide shear zone (vertical installation), (c) to monitor thaw settlement under a newly constructed embankment (horizontal installation), and (d) to identify movement mechanisms within a slide and to evaluate the M-IPIs functionality through large amounts of shear (vertical installation). Each M-IPI was evaluated for ease of installation and subsequent retrieval, durability, and functionality in frozen ground. Measurements from both devices compared well with those from the inclinometer probe; this feature indicated that these devices were suitable for use in cold regions. However, field experience indicates that the installation procedure for each instrument is better undertaken at temperatures above freezing because of the manual dexterity required. For horizontal installations over permafrost, it is recommended that casing ends be secured to posts anchored below the permafrost table and any cold-affected plastic components be replaced between installations to avoid unwanted breakage during reinstallation.
