Impulsive behavior and substance abuse.

Abstract: Given this theoretical attention, it would seem critical for substance abuse treatment programs to incorporate components specifically targeting impulsivity (McCown, 1990). Furthermore, understanding the pathophysiology of impulsivity is valuable in developing psychopharmacological interventions for substance abusers. As discussed in earlier chapters, the operational definition of impulsivity has varied across contexts. For example, impulsivity has been defined as a cognitive style by some authors (e.g., Kagan,… Show more

“…However, it is possible that adult traumas reported on the LTS were experienced as a result of addiction, such as causing a car accident while driving under the influence or contracting a serious illness from sharing needles. There is extensive evidence that substance abusers rate highly on psychological and behavioral indicators of impulsivity (Amlung, Vedelago, Acker, Balodis, & Mackillop, 2016;De Wit, 2008;Ersche, Turton, Pradhan, Bullmore, & Robbins, 2010;Johnson, Robert, Corrigan, & West, 1993). Furthermore, repeated opioid use has shown to alter neural stress pathways, making one more emotionally reactive to adverse events (Valverde & Maldonado, 2005;Zhou, Proudnikov, Yuferov, & Kreek, 2010).…”

“…Consequently, more impulsive smokers may derive particular benefit from cessation programs that focus on negative affect. Serotonergic antidepressant agents may also be effective cessation aids for impulsive smokers, given that they may reduce impulsivity (Johnson, Malow, Corrigan, & West, 1993) as well as negative affect.…”

“…; DSM-IV; American Psychiatric Association [APA], 1994) includes an exclusive category of impulse control disorders, and impulsiveness is a diagnostic criterion for several other common DSM-IV disorders, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, borderline personality disorder, and antisocial personality disorder. Individuals suffering from substance abuse disorders, bulimia, bipolar depression, and some forms of psychotic disorder have also been described as impulsive (Coles, 1997; Hucker, 1997;Johnson, Malow, Corrigan, & West, 1993).Although impulsive behavior has been widely studied within the behavioral and biological sciences, there is little consensus on a precise operational definition, and theoretical and etiological models have varied considerably (Milich &…”
