Improving understanding in ordinary differential equations through writing in a dynamical environment

Abstract: Research on writing in mathematics has shown that students learn more effectively in an environment that promotes this skill and that writing is most beneficial when it is directed at the learning aspect. Writing, however, necessitates proficiency on the part of the students that may not have been developed at earlier learning stages. Research has indicated though that the burden placed on teachers and learners to master this skill is compensated by the mathematical learning in such an environment. Techniques … Show more

“…For the past decade, I have taught DEs with an eye toward promoting multiple representations [8]. In line with [3,11], I encouraged my students to access notation by mathematical communication. Mathematical communication, verbally or in writing, is challenging for many students, especially multilingual students, and poses barriers on exams ( [4,5]).…”

“…Diferansiyel denklemler konusunda gözlenen yanlış kavramsallaştırma-ların bazı nedenleri; genelleme eğilimi, formal ve sezgisel bilgi çatışması ve tersinirlik karmaşasıdır (Rasmussen, 1997;Raychaudhuri, 2008). (Burtch, 2005;Duvall, 2005;Habre, 2012).
