Improving the Sensitivity of Humidity Sensor Based on Mach-Zehnder Interferometer Coated with a Methylcellulose

Abstract: A novel humidity sensor based on Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) with the single-mode fiber (SMF) coated with methylcellulose (MC) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The MZI consists of two waist enlarged structures. Such an all-fiber MZI incorporates an intermodal interference between the core mode and cladding modes. The MC is coated on the surface of the SMF. External humidity changes the refractive index of MC, causing the intensity changes of the interference pattern. The proposed sensor is li… Show more

“…Compared to a traditional electric RH sensor, optical fiber-based sensors exhibit a great number of advantages, such as security to the human body, miniaturization for integration, and good resistance to electromagnetic interference. In recent years, a variety of fiber devices have been implemented in to the design of optical fiber RH sensors, configurations including interferometers [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 ], long period fiber gratings [ 8 , 9 ], tapered fibers [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ], fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) [ 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 ], mode couplers [ 19 , 20 ], ZnO nanostructures [ 21 , 22 ], evanescent wave absorption structures [ 23 , 24 ], and so on. Among these configurations, light intensity demodulation is often used since it is simple and cost effective.…”

“…A sensitivity of 0.094% RH was obtained during the simulation. An increase or decrease in the relative humidity has shown the difference of intensities up to 0.03 dB ( 10 ). Highly sensitive silicon MZI based ultrasound sensor was discussed by Ouyang et al In this sensor, one end of the sensing arm was integrated with a thin membrane and another end of the arm was used as a reference.…”

“…Optical fiber sensors provide several advantages over conventional electrical sensors, such as integrated miniaturization and good resistance to electromagnetic interference [ 2 ]. Various optical fiber structures have been used recently in the design of RH sensors, including interferometers [ 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ], long-period fiber gratings [ 9 , 10 ], fiber Bragg gratings [ 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ], microfibers [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 ], and polymer fibers [ 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 ]. These structures can be broadly divided into two types: intensity modulated and wavelength modulated.…”
