Improving the reporting of public health intervention research: advancing TREND and CONSORT

Abstract: Population health policy makers need synthesized, detailed and high quality a priori accounts of effective interventions in order to make better progress in tackling population morbidities and inequalities. Adding simple criteria to reporting standards will significantly improve the quality and usefulness of published evidence and increase its impact on public health program planning.

“…Especially in the context of observational studies, understanding confounding is integral for performing, reading, and interpreting public health research. [21][22][23][24][25] Without the understanding of confounding, incorrect conclusions and spurious associations are much more likely to be performed in analysis and missed under review. This domain assesses the students' abilities to identify scenarios under which these are likely to occur or have occurred.…”

“…REGRESS is a competency-based construct built on CONSORT manuscript requirements (guidelines required by many medical and public health journals). 21,22 The quiz consists of 27 items intending to evaluate students' abilities to interpret and use the regression equation, understand modeling, statistical significance, and effect modification, and to assess assumptions, confounding, and colinearity. The REGRESS assessment is a practical and valuable tool for the students to assess their baseline knowledge and how much they have learned throughout the semester, while focusing on the most essential topics and analytic skills which they will need after the course is over.…”

“…Process evaluation is identified as an important reporting aspect of the CONSORT statement for public health research interventions [11,12] and is regarded as an essential component of health promotion program evaluation [13]. Process evaluation measures variation in program activities, reach, participant satisfaction and perception, and quality and delivery of the program strategies and takes into account or limits the influence of Type III errors in health promotion practice [14,15].…”
