Improving the Protection Performance of AA2024-T3 in 3.5 wt% NaCl Solution Using the Synergistic Effect of Cerium Cations and Diethyldithiocarbamate Molecules

Abstract: In the present work, the synergistic effect of diethyldithiocarbamate (DDTC) molecules and Ce3+ cations on the corrosion inhibition of the 2024-T3 aluminum alloy was assessed by employing surface analysis and electrochemical tests. For this purpose, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were measured in the presence of Ce3+ cations and DDTC molecules. Also, surface analysis methods were employed to study the mechanisms of the inhibition in the presence of the Ce3+ cations and… Show more

“…The bottom anodic layer is sealed by LDH precursors along with the precipitation of cerium hydroxide/oxides on it, further the final upper air film, and the dense bilayer LDH network sandwiched between them. Stearate-intercalated LDHs repelled the permeation of water molecules and chlorides, which is a key important parameter of that work where stearate introduction causes the lowering of surface energy and endorses superhydrophobic characteristics that enhance the active protection for LDHs; the presence of cerium in the LDH frame protects by its inhibition action through reducing the cathodic reaction rate on contact with corrosive media [26,27]. The strong passive and active protection were found to develop the compactness and integrity of LDHs, which is significant for delaying the corrosion process and is a powerful approach to enhancing anti-corrosion behavior.…”

“…4, all samples showed one time-constant except unmodified/epoxy and UiO-66-NH 2 /epoxy samples after 45 days. The appearance of second time-constant could be a sign of double-layer formation in the organic-inorganic interaction face 72 . The double-layer creation is due to water uptake and consequent electrolyte accumulation in some areas of the metal-coating interface.…”

“…With regard to the organic compounds used for synthesizing Ce ion-loaded organic corrosion inhibitors, dithiocarbamate compounds containing dithiocarbamato (N CS 2 − ) functional groups have been applied as effective corrosion inhibitors for Al alloys [ 11 , 24 ]. This is because N .…”

“…Recently, there have been many studies regarding the use of a combination of Ce salts and dithiocarbamate compounds as corrosion inhibitors for AA2024-T3 in a 3.5% NaCl solution. Two compounds are either applied simultaneously into corrosive media [ 11 , 24 ] or are combined to form a new complex, and used as a corrosion inhibitor [ 22 ]. Moreover, almost all investigated corrosion inhibitors for AA2024-T3 in NaCl solution in two cases originated from diethyldithiocarbamate compounds (4 C—a short alkyl chain).…”
