Improving the properties of aluminum-lithium composites in aerospace applications: review

Ch Polayya,
C S P Rao,
G B Veeresh Kumar

Abstract: Aluminium (Al)-Lithium (Li) alloys have found widespread applications in aerospace and military domains. Primarily, they are found to have low density, leading to weight savings and several economic considerations. The paper explores the historical development of Al-Li alloys across distinct generations, highlighting their evolution. It also delves into the diverse applications of Al-Li alloys in aerospace and military domains. A concise discussion of the mechanical behaviour and tensile strengths is presented… Show more

“…It is a major step in solving the energy crisis and pollution [1,2]. Polayya et al [3] examined the evolution, uses, and mechanical characteristics of Al-Li composites throughout three generations, highlighting the military and aerospace industries because of their high tensile strength and low density. Al-MMCs were reinforced with various materials like Mg/ SiC [4], Al 2 O 3 [5], TiC [6], Cu [7,8], B 4 C [9], CNT [10], Diamond [11], Graphene [12], ZrO2/Gr [13], coconut shell ash and granite dust [14] etc.…”
