Improving the Model of Emission From Spinning Dust: Effects of Grain Wobbling and Transient Spin-Up

Abstract: Observations continue to support the interpretation of the anomalous microwave foreground as electric dipole radiation from spinning dust grains as proposed by Draine & Lazarian (1998ab). In this paper we present a refinement of the original model by improving the treatment of a number of physical effects. First, we consider a disk-like grain rotating with angular velocity at an arbitrary angle with respect to the grain symmetry axis (i.e., grain wobbling) and derive the rotational damping and excitation coeff… Show more

“…9). We note that at these frequencies recent theoretical work indicate that rotational emission of PAHs for G 0 > ∼ 10 3 and gas densities n H ∼ 10 5 cm −3 might also contribute (Hoang et al 2010;Silsbee et al 2010). We emphasize the fact that the dust contributions at 60 and 100 μm allow for a better determination of the LG SED around its emission peak and hence better mean temperature estimates for the LGs, a necessary step in the extraction of the thermal dust component in Planck data.…”

“…mixing of two or three components along the line of sight, density of the interstellar medium). Also, recent studies (Hoang et al 2010;Silsbee et al 2010) have shown that refinements on spinning dust models can lead to significant changes in the shape and intensity of the spinning dust emission peak. Including such effects is beyond the scope of this paper, but could help understanding the excess in the SMC in terms of spinning dust emission.…”

“…Ferrara & Dettmar (1994) showed that "spinning dust" located in the ionized gas of many galaxies were producing radio emission. Studies by Anderson & Watson (1993), Draine & Lazarian (1998), Hoang et al (2010), Silsbee et al (2011) or the recent Planck results (Planck Collaboration 2011a) aimed to characterise this component which explains most of the 10−100 GHz emission, also called the anomalous foreground. Ysard & Verstraete (2010) recently suggested that their peak frequency could depend on different parameters (radiation field intensity, size distribution of the dust species, dipole moment distribution, physical parameters of the gas phases etc.)…”
