Improving the design of the traction motor of trains to reduce the aerodynamic noise

Abstract: The traction motor of trains, which is the core equipment in the railway industry, is a major noise source. As the protection of the environment becomes increasingly more important, the regulations regarding acceptable train noise are becoming stricter. Therefore, more studies on the traction motor of trains are required to find a method to reduce the noise. The existing studies on this topic are insufficient because of the high cost of producing prototypes and the absence of an aerodynamic noise analysis sche… Show more

“…Therefore, research on reducing the aerodynamic noise of traction motors has been of great interest. Kim J-H et al [7] successfully established a design method to reduce the noise of railroad traction motors using numerical analysis techniques. By optimizing seven design parameters, such as fan diameter and number of blades, a noise level reduction of about 4 dB (A) was successfully achieved, and the applicability of the selected design parameters, the improved methodology, and the final model were verified.…”
