Improving the Activity for Oxygen Evolution Reaction by Tailoring Oxygen Defects in Double Perovskite Oxides

Abstract: Developing low-cost, high-performance electro-catalysts is essential for large-scale application of electrochemical energy devices. In this article, reported are the findings in understanding and controlling oxygen defects in PrBa 0.5 Sr 0.5 Co 1.5 Fe 0.5 O 5+δ (PBSCF) for significantly enhancing the rate of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are reported. Utilizing surface-sensitive characterization techniques and first-principle calculations, it is found that excessive oxygen vacancies promote OH − affiliation … Show more

“…Synthesis of PBSCF thin films with different orientations. By choosing appropriate single crystal substrates, epitaxial or highly textured oxide thin films with specific surface orientation can be efficiently grown by PLD techniques 25,[29][30][31] . For PBSCF, the X-ray diffraction (XRD) peaks of (110) and (102) planes overlap (Supplementary Fig.…”

“…This also provides easier control of the reaction kinetics during the synthesis process [40]. However, under excessive reduction of annealing conditions, aggregation of the perovskite oxide nanostructures could occur, leading to a collapsed structure and degraded OER activity [51].…”

“…[6,7] Second, the detailed mechanism of defects formation has not been completely elucidated yet, and that has significantly hindered the rational design of efficient electrocatalysts. [8] Thus, the development of pH-universal catalysts is extremely important for practical application yet challenging.…”
