Improving Synchrony in Small Group Asynchronous Online Discussions

Abstract: Online courses often select asynchronous tools for teamwork as it allows temporal freedom for students who might come from different time zones or have busy schedules. These solutions work better with larger groups, where due to the quantity of participants, it is easier to get replies faster. In this study, we investigate challenges that arise in asynchronous discussions with small group (4-5 participants). Empirical data was collected from the UNIPS pedagogical employee training online course Becoming a Teac… Show more

“…We also believe that this research opens up interesting lines regarding the study of the use of synchronous tools since our data show that the orientation is mostly towards the use of asynchronous tools, thus coinciding with what generally occurs in online teaching (Laato & Murtonen, 2020). And the experience developed in online degrees will be useful for students' assessment in general, especially because of all the changes and challenges in higher education in recent years caused by the pandemic (Ali & Damour, 2021;Fatima et al, 2021;Peytcheva-Forsyth & Aleksieva, 2021).…”

“…HEIs are constantly seeking ways to improve and optimize their existing teaching practices, both the content and pedagogy. One of the recent trends in HE has been the development and use of technological tools, sparking research into areas such as computer-assisted collaborative learning (e.g., [10,11]), educational games (e.g., [12]), and asynchronous online learning [13]. Technological advances and the availability of learning tools have increased the popularity of some pedagogical approaches such as flipped learning or blended learning [14,15] but also provided analytical tools for improving existing teaching [16,17].…”
