PurposeSailing toward sustainability is becoming the strategic focus of shipping firms. Drawing on organizational information processing theory (OIPT) and the theory of planned behavior (TPB), we investigated the impact of digital transformation (DT) on shipping firms’ sustainable management performance and the boundary conditions guiding this relationship.Design/methodology/approachThe authors examined the hypotheses by employing hierarchical linear modeling on two-wave time-lagged data from 189 shipping firm employees in China.FindingsThe results suggest that a shipping firm’s DT is positively associated with its sustainable management performance and that the relationship is strengthened by having better cross-functional and customer coordination mechanisms. Furthermore, our three-way interaction analyses show that while injunctive norms in a shipping firm’s networks can strengthen the contingency roles of both cross-functional and customer coordination mechanisms, descriptive norms alone significantly influence customer coordination.Originality/valueDrawing on organizational information processing and planned behavior theories, the present research provides new insights into leveraging DT for sailing toward sustainable success. Moreover, this study extends the current understandings of the boundary conditions of the relationship between DT and sustainable management performance by showing the two-way and three-way interaction effects of coordination mechanisms and subjective norms. The findings of the present research can be utilized as effective strategies for promoting sustainable management performance.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to examine the extent to which a firm is able to leverage its information system (IS) innovativeness to improve supply chain resilience through developing and employing its analytics capability. It further considers how this mediating effect of analytics capability can be enhanced by internal and external integration.Design/methodology/approachBuilding on the logic of organizational information processing theory, a mediated moderation model is developed and tested using structural equation modeling and partial least squares regression based on survey responses from 247 working professionals.FindingsThe results indicate that IS innovativeness improves a firm’s supply chain resilience through enhanced analytics capability, with higher levels of internal and external integration further strengthening the effects of this mediating relationship.Originality/valueThis study is among the first to empirically test the effects of IS innovativeness and analytics capability on supply chain resilience and to examine the impacts of internal and external integration as key factors affecting the strength of these relationships. The findings complement existing literature through providing new insights into the linkage between IS strategy and supply chain resilience and highlighting the importance of relationships throughout the supply chain to enhance the efficacy of a firm’s analytics capability within this domain.

The advent of the novel coronavirus, also called COVID-19, caused widespread disruptions worldwide. This unprecedented health crisis led to major disruptions in supply chain networks; therefore, innovative strategies and capabilities have the potential to alleviate its impacts. Considering this situation, this study examined how COVID-19 impacted management innovation, the information processing capability, business model innovation, knowledge management capability, and sustainable supply chain performance (SSCP) in Pakistan. To test hypotheses, data were collected from companies in Pakistan engaged in supply chain management or supply chain departments within manufacturing companies, and investigations were carried out employing structural equation modeling. Based on empirical results, COVID-19 outbreaks negatively impacted SSCP, but not management innovation, information processing capability, business model innovation, or the knowledge management capability. Additionally, COVID-19 and SSCP are mediated by management innovation, the processing capability, business model innovation, and the knowledge management capability. By underlining the significance of the resource-based view, dynamic capability, and organizational information processing theories, this research contributes to the body of knowledge on sustainable supply chains. The conceptual model presented in this research may be used in supply chain (SC) and logistics management to reduce COVID-19 disruptions in SC operations and boost profitability during a pandemic.
