This study determined the student profile and enrollment of the three Universities in the University Belt. It also found out the respondents' level of consideration concerning the institutional image indicators that served as basis for attracting prospective entrants. Descriptive statistics revealed the following: most of the respondents belonged to families with five members and lived in family-owned houses in the cities of Manila and Quezon; most of the respondents were taking up Medicine-related courses; most of FEU and UE respondents belonged to less-than-Php 30,000-monthly family income bracket, while UST respondents belonged to greater-than-Php 100,000-monthly family income; and UST had the most number of respondents with family members studying in the same school. A Geographical Information System-generated map also showed that there were more respondents from Marikina than from the nearby municipality of San Juan. For non-Metro Manila settlers, most of the respondents were from the provinces of CALABARZON (Region 4-A) or Central Luzon (Region 3). The three sets of respondents considered five indicators but had different levels of considerations in six indicators. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that five out of six indicators were found to have a significant difference in the level of consideration. Further comparison was utilized through the use of Tukey-HSD. Thus, the hypothesis stating that there is no significant difference in the level of consideration of the respondents from the three Universities regarding institutional-image indicators is partially upheld.

Good practice for enhancing the engagement and success of commencing students

There is widespread recognition that higher education institutions (HEIs) must actively support commencing students to ensure equity in access to the opportunities afforded by higher education. This role is particularly critical for students who because of educational, cultural or financial disadvantage or because they are members of social groups currently under-represented in higher education, may require additional transitional support to ''level the playing field.'' The challenge faced by HEIs is to provide this ''support'' in a way that is integrated into regular teaching and learning practices and reaches all commencing students. The Student Success Program (SSP) is an intervention in operation at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) designed to identify and support those students deemed to be at risk of disengaging from their learning and their institution. Two sets of evidence of the impact of the SSP are presented: First, its expansion (a) from a one-faculty pilot project (Nelson et al. in Stud Learn Eval Innov Dev 6:1-15, 2009) to all faculties and (b) into a variety of applications mirroring the student life cycle; and second, an evaluation of the impact of the SSP on students exposed to it. The outcomes suggest that: the SSP is an example of good practice that can be successfully applied to a variety of learning contexts and student enrolment situations; and the impact of the intervention on student persistence is sustained for at least 12 months and positively influences student retention. It is claimed that the good practice evidenced by the SSP is dependent on its integration into the broader First Year Experience Program at QUT as an example of transition pedagogy in action.

Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to examine recent literature for a review of the concepts of collaboration in library and information science and related disciplines and to develop a conceptual framework for application in academic contexts globally. Design/methodology/approach -An investigation of literature exploring the multifaceted meanings and dimensions of collaboration and subsequent development of a framework for analysis. To exemplify the use of the framework in analysing collaboration between academics and librarians, and to demonstrate the impact of context on collaboration, the paper explores the situation and educational contexts in two national settings -one a developed country (Australia) and the other a developing country (Vietnam). Findings -Contextual factors have a substantial impact on the nature of collaboration between academics and librarians. The collaboration framework developed is applied to academic settings in two countries, Vietnam and Australia, and dimensions of collaboration are compared and contrasted in the two countries. Insights and implications are drawn concerning the distinctive features of effective collaboration as well as the achievements and challenges of such collaborative partnerships. Research limitations/implications -This literature-based article reports on the first part of a larger research project. Further development and application of the conceptual framework in studying the collaborative relationship between academics and librarians empirically are deemed important. Originality/value -This paper provides insights into the current condition and challenges in developing collaboration between academics and librarians. The proposed framework is beneficial to academics, librarians and universities interested in addressing the issues of this partnership in various academic contexts.
