Improving RFID traceability systems with verifiable quality

Abstract: PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to develop an efficient tool to ensure traceability data entry based on RFID and improve the detection of fakes inside the supply chain.Design/methodology/approachFirst, the authors put forward a secure traceability system with a cryptographic operator that improves efficiency, saves costs and is adaptable to all types of supply chains. Second, the authors implement the system in a food manufacturing company, show the compatibility of the system with the initial production c… Show more

“…Researchers that used measures in pursuit of this objective also tended to use technology, which was also mentioned in terms of transparency. For example, Azuara et al (2012) discussed introducing effective tools that make it possible to detect faulty or counterfeit products in incoming goods, thus facilitating the handling of such products before they are introduced into the production processes [28,31]. Studies have also mentioned process structuring and adapting current quality regulations [32,33].…”

“…As a result, track and trace systems cannot rely solely on traceability tags and requires an additional security mechanism for authentication and prevention of unauthorised reproduction/cloning [10]. Such system is often known as a 'secured traceability' system [11] and can be found in food, pharmaceutical, cosmetics and luxury product supply chain [10,11,24]. Table 1 provides an overview of the various technologies and their pros and cons with respect to product authentication, tracking and security.…”

“…Traceability technologies play an important role in improving the performance of product traceability efforts. The major available traceability tools include barcodes, radio frequency identification (RFID), and electronic identification (EID) [13][14][15][16]. Wireless sensor technologies are attracting attention due to their reduced cost and promising application in many fields including agriculture.…”
