Improving Research Practice in Rat Orthotopic and Partial Orthotopic Liver Transplantation: A Review, Recommendation, and Publication Guide

Abstract: Background: Due to a worldwide shortage of donor organs for liver transplantation, alternative approaches, such as split and living donor liver transplantations, were introduced to increase the donor pool and reduce mortality on liver transplant waiting lists. Numerous details concerning the mechanisms and pathophysiology of liver regeneration, small-for-size syndrome, rejection, and tolerance in partial liver transplantation facilitated the development of various animal models. The high number of preclinical … Show more

“…The mouse is the most commonly used animal, and several mouse models have been developed 20. In 1973, Lee et al reported the first orthotopic liver transplantation in the rat, which consisted of performing an extracorporeal shunt between the portal and jugular vein at the recipient and posterior anastomosis of the implant to the hepatic vein, the portal vein and the recipient's aorta 21.…”

“…They showed a high satisfaction, especially among students residing far from their training centers. Today, free-of-charge video platforms are widely available and even scientific video journals are gaining ground; therefore, the role of quality and didactic training videos in surgical training and in its international standardization is highly emphasized [23, 26, 27]. …”
