Improving quark flavor separation with forward W and Z production at LHCb

Abstract: We quantify the constraints on the flavour separation between the quarks and antiquarks in the proton provided by the recent forward weak gauge boson production data from the LHCb experiment at √ s = 7 and 8 TeV. Performed in the framework of the NNPDF3.1 global analysis, this study highlights the key role that the LHCb W and Z data have in achieving a robust quark flavor separation in the large-x region, including the strange and charm quarks. We demonstrate how the LHCb measurements lead to improved determin… Show more

“…-Differential distributions for on-peak W and Z boson production in the forward region, 2.0 ≤ η l ≤ 4.5, covered by detectors with large acceptance, including forward rapidity. These measure-ments constrain quark flavour separation, including the strange and charm content of the proton, in the large and small x region [553]. -The inclusive production of jets in different bins of rapidity (both in the central and forward region) as a function of p jet T .…”

“…the PDF region with low Bjorken-x values is accessible only to LHCb, due to its forward acceptance [5]. Moreover, the knowledge of the inclusive b and c quarks production rate from QCD processes is necessary to understand the background contributions in searches for massive particles decaying into b or c quarks, such as the Higgs boson or new heavy particles.…”
