In acidic soils with high phosphorus (P) fixing capacity, P application at levels higher than crop requirements is common in crops with high P demands such as potato (Solanum tuberosum L.), which could lead to eutrophication. Recycled sources of P fertilizer, such as struvite, can be efficient in meeting crop P demands while minimizing P losses. The objective of this study-conducted in four provinces over 3 yr (2016-2018, with 12 sites in total) in Eastern Canada-was to assess potato response to P fertilizer as triple superphosphate (TSP) or a mixture of TSP with struvite. Eight P treatments were applied with five increasing P rates as TSP (0, 26, 52, 79, and 105 kg P ha −1 ) and three treatments as a mixture of TSP and struvite (25, 50, and 75% (w/w) struvite) at a rate of 79 kg P ha −1 . Phosphorus availability indices measured multiple times over the growing season were composed of Mehlich-3 extracted P (P M3 ), soil P adsorbed on anion exchange membranes (P AEMs ), and petiole P-PO 4 (P petiole ) concentrations. There was a potato yield response to P inputs at all sites, with the control treatment showing lower potato yield at all sites. Potato yield, P petiole , P M3 , and P AEMs were comparable between 100% TSP and TSP+struvite at the same rate, except at one site where struvite at a higher proportion depressed yield and was associated with lower P uptake. Overall, the use of struvite could be a sustainable mean to address long-term globally P scarcity.

The ability of process‐based soil–crop models to simulate potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) yield and N uptake for a range of N fertilization under the conditions of eastern Canada has never been tested. Our objectives were (i) to calibrate and evaluate the performance of the STICS model for the Shepody and Russet Burbank cultivars with cultivar‐specific critical N concentration dilution curves, and (ii) to quantify the gain in model performance with cultivar‐specific N concentration curves rather than a generic curve. Data sets including measurements of leaf area index (LAI), total and tuber biomass, and total and tuber N uptake for several N rates (0–280 kg N ha−1) collected at Charlottetown, PE; Fredericton, NB; and Québec, QC, Canada were used. Calibration was done with one data set from Charlottetown for Shepody and one data set from Québec for Russet Burbank, while all the other data sets were used to evaluate model performance. Following calibration, the STICS model generally performed well, with a normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) < 30% and a normalized mean error (NME) ranging from –8% to 23%, for LAI and biomass. Model performance was slightly worse for total and tuber N uptake, although cultivar‐specific N concentration curves for Shepody and Russet Burbank improved model performance compared with a generic curve with a lower NRMSE (18–50% vs. 21–63%) and NME (–9 to 23% vs. –14 to 23%). Cultivar‐specific critical N concentration curves should therefore be used for assessing the N budget of potato cropping systems.Core Ideas The STICS soil–crop model was calibrated and evaluated for two potato cultivars. Calibrated and evaluated variables were LAI, total and tuber biomass, and total and tuber N uptake. Cultivar‐specific critical N concentration curves are recommended for N budget assessment.

Fall plowing of forage in a typical barley (Hordeum vulgare L.)–forage–potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) rotation in Prince Edward Island (PEI), Canada has led to negative environmental impacts, including soil erosion and nitrate leaching to groundwater. Data from five locations in PEI during 2009–2016 were assessed to determine the effects of delaying plow‐down of forage from early and late fall to spring on economic returns and risk of returns trade‐offs for potato producers. Factors related to fall or spring plowing such as soil erosion, nitrate leaching, planting date, effect on weeds, insects and diseases, potato harvest loss, and labor constraints were quantified. Potato yields were the same for fall and spring plowing; however, combined data for the five experiments showed late fall plowing was preferred over spring plowing for risk‐averse or neutral potato growers. Risk neutral farmers would require receiving between CAN$229 and $836 ha−1 yr−1, depending on yield loss for spring plowing due to delayed seeding, to be indifferent between fall and spring plowing options. Risk‐averse farmers at all levels of risk aversion would require being paid more than $600 ha−1 yr−1 to be indifferent between fall and spring tillage when 4–6% of yield loss for spring plowing due to delayed planting is assumed. Although spring tillage provides reductions in the risk of soil erosion and nitrate leaching, it also affects production risk and uncertainty. Therefore, we recommend farmers plow forage as late as possible in the autumn and replace it with other conservation tillage practices.
