Improving Plant Growth and Alleviating Photosynthetic Inhibition and Oxidative Stress From Low-Light Stress With Exogenous GR24 in Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) Seedlings

Abstract: Low light (LL) is one of the main limiting factors that negatively affect tomato growth and yield. Techniques of chemical regulation are effective horticultural methods to improve stress resistance. Strigolactones (SLs), newly discovered phytohormones, are considered as important regulators of physiological responses. We investigated the effects of foliage spray of GR24, a synthesized SLs, on tomato seedlings grown under LL stress conditions. The results showed that application of GR24 effectively mitigated th… Show more

“…Overall, many studies have reported on the influence of low light or low temperature alone on plant seedlings (Ogweno et al 2009, Sui et al 2012, Zhu et al 2017, Megha et al 2018, Lu et al 2019, but only a few focused on the effects of LL, which is similar to the environment in greenhouses during winter-spring days. In particular, the Car composition in plants, especially in pepper leaves, under L and LL has not been reported.…”

“…Chloroplasts are the main site for photosynthetic reactions and are also sensitive to HT stress (Tang et al 2006, Marečková et al 2019. The Chl content often reflects the chloroplast development and photosynthetic performance (Lu et al 2019). In our study, HT stress significantly reduced the contents of Chl a and Chl b, probably because the high temperature severely damaged the structure and function of Chl, or significantly increased the activity of Chl-degrading enzymes.…”
