Improving Hybrid FTL by Fully Exploiting Internal SSD Parallelism with Virtual Blocks

Abstract: Compared with either block or page-mapping Flash Translation Layer (FTL), hybrid-mapping FTL for flash Solid State Disks (SSDs), such as Fully Associative Section Translation (FAST), has relatively high space efficiency because of its smaller mapping table than the latter and higher flexibility than the former. As a result, hybrid-mapping FTL has become the most commonly used scheme in SSDs. But the hybrid-mapping FTL incurs a large number of costly full-merge operations. Thus, a critical challenge to hybrid-m… Show more

“…By erasing multiple blocks simultaneously, more space can be reclaimed during an erase operation. Our study is in line with VBP-FAST [17], I/O-parallelized GC [9], and IPPBE [15] in terms of leveraging parallelism inside SSDs. In contrast, we focus on utilizing the page-level parallelism.…”

“…Leveraging parallelism inside SSDs: VBP-FAST [17] virtually makes a logical block span several channels. Therefore, data in a virtual block is actually placed on multiple physical blocks belonging to different channels, dies, and planes.…”

“…In recent years, flash-based storage devices, solid-state drives (SSDs), are increasingly replacing hard-disk drives in modern storage systems [1], [12], [13]. Such flash-based storage devices have a cache layer, called a buffer cache, that buffers data [10], [11], [14], [15], [28]. When writing data to SSD, the data are cached in the buffer cache of SSD for a while.…”
