Improving estuarine net flux estimates for dissolved cadmium export at the annual timescale: Application to the Gironde Estuary

Abstract: Dissolved Cd (CdD) concentrations along the salinity gradient were measured in surface water of the Gironde Estuary during 15 cruises (2001-2007), covering a wide range of contrasting situations in terms of hydrology, turbidity and season. During all situations dissolved Cd concentrations displayed max i mu m values in the mid-salinity range, reflecting Cd addition by chloride-induced desorption and complexation. The daily net CdD fluxes from the Gironde Estuary to the coastal oc ean were estimated using Boyle… Show more

“…This hypothesis is consistent with Cd-rich SPM sam-pled at HT in the bay at the beginning of the survey (Table 1), In contrast, during low water discharges from mid-June to July, the plume was less extended in the coastal zone and the turbidity zone had moved into the estuary (Fig. 4), inducing Cd desorption inside the estuary (Robert et al, 2004;Audry et al, 2007;Dabrin et al, 2009). In this condition, particles potentially reaching the bay are quasi Cd-depleted.…”

“…The bay is influenced by the Charente and Seudre Rivers (Fig. 1), but also by the historical polymetallic pollution of the Gironde Estuary waters (Latouche, 1988;Jouanneau et al, 1990;Blanc et al, 1999;Schäfer et al, 2002;Audry et al, 2007;Dabrin et al, 2009). Because of this pollution, the French Mussel Watch program (Réseau National d'Observation, RNO, and recently renamed Réseau d'Observation des Contaminants CHimiques, ROCCH), have been surveying Cd bioaccumulation in wild oysters from the Gironde and the MOB, since the 1970s.…”

“…between the two end-members. and for Zn such deviation could be explained by the formation of chloro-complexes (salinity and SPM positively correlate) (Hatje et al, 2003a;Waeles et al, 2005) (Dabrin et al, 2009;Deycard et al, 2014;Elbaz-Poulichet et al, 1996;Fu et al, 2013), for Co this is less expected considering its inorganic speciation. Contrary, no evident trends for other metals, or even increasing trend with salinity (Fe and Pb) were found (Fu et al, 2013).…”

“…Ainsi cette étude propose une méthode de quantification des flux nets annuels de métaux dissous plus précise que celle précédemment publiée (e.g. Chester, 1990 ;Dabrin et al, 2009). L'utilisation de la nouvelle méthode de calcul permettra de décrire plus précisément l'évolution des flux nets annuels de cadmium dissous de 1989 à 2017, c'est-à-dire sur la majeure partie de la période de décroissance de la pollution cadmiée en Gironde.…”
