Fluid delivery in grinding process remains an important matter requiring further research. The growing demand and the rising cost of cutting fluid usage and the environmental aspect of fluid disposal are a key driver for research into alternative fluid delivery techniques. One of the alternative fluid reduction methods employed in machining is minimum quantity lubrication (MQL). In specific grinding operations, MQL is capable of maintaining or even reducing temperature, yet using extremely small amounts of lubricant. Therefore, MQL addresses not only more economical production costs but also a critical matter of the natural and worker environment protection. This article reviews application of the MQL technique in abrasive machining in comparison to conventional and dry grinding. Common steels EN8, M2, and EN31 were ground with a general purpose alumina wheel. Results obtained determined that MQL performance can be compared to flood delivery under the conditions investigated. In some specific conditions, MQL achieved better results. Performance indicators included: grinding power, specific forces (tangential and normal), grinding temperature, and workpiece surface roughness.

Atualmente, as empresas estão buscando produzir de forma sustentável. Dessa forma, na indústria metal mecânica, o uso de fluidos de corte em abundância está sendo fortemente substituido por métodos que diminuem o uso desses fluidos. Nesse contexto, há a mínima quantidade de lubrificante, MQL. Apesar de usar uma quantidade mínima de fluido de corte, não apresenta bom desempenho, em termos da qualidade final do produto e vida da ferramenta, devido ao empastamento do rebolo, quando se reduz a quantidade de fluido de corte. Assim, neste trabalho, utilizou-se um sistema de limpeza da superfície de corte do rebolo para eliminar seu empastamento e, com isso, tornar o MQL mais acessível tecnologicamente. Para tal, analisaram-se a qualidade do produto e vida da ferramenta. Concluiu-se que a adição do sistema de limpeza, além de diminuir a quantidade de fluido usada, otimiza os resultados de qualidade superficial do produto e preservação da vida da ferramenta, os quais ficaram melhores, com relação ao uso do fluido de corte em abundância. Dessa forma, é possível diminuir a quantidade de fluido de corte, por meio do MQL mais limpeza, mas esse fato não deve ser generalizado, pois cada material usinado é um caso particular.
