Improving Dietary Practices of Elderly Individuals: The Power of Prompting, Feedback, and Social Reinforcement

Abstract: Three intervention packages consisting of (a) enhanced prompts, feedback, and social reinforcement; (b) a lottery; and (c) serving as a confederate were added and removed in sequence as adjacent conditions in an extended withdrawal design to assess their effects on the dietary choices of elderly persons. Participants were 3 elderly residents of an independent living facility who were identified as making consistently poor dietary choices and who had medical conditions that necessitated changes in their eating … Show more

“…Cognitive behavioural therapy has been used in the fields of psychiatry and psychology with beneficial effects 17–20 . The application to patients with chronic diseases has recently been investigated, and efficacy has been shown for the reduction of death risk in survivors after ventricular fibrillation, 21 improvement of maximum oxygen intake in patients after coronary artery bypass surgery 22 and improvement of glycohaemoglobinA1c values in diabetic patients 23 .…”

“…Miller and Watkins () found that when parents were presented with graphical representations—specifically bar graphs—of intelligence and academic achievement data, recall of relevant details increased. Indeed, graphical displays of data are effective methods of providing feedback to clients (e.g., Stack & Milan, ), and they are more efficient at communicating information than tabular displays of data (Gelman, Pasarica, & Dodhia, ). Although these authors did not explicitly evaluate the use of graphical displays of behavioral data (e.g., frequency), researchers have shown improvements in recall and decision‐making of health‐related material by supplementing written content with graphs (e.g., Garcia‐Retamero & Cokely, ).…”

“…Improved dietary choices by the elderly (Stock & Milan, 1993), nutritional quality of food purchases , and dietary compliance of children on dialysis machines (Magrab & Papadopoulou, 1977) have been achieved through various combinations of prompts, feedback, and social reinforcement, although experimental difficulties limited some of the findings (Winett, Kramer, Walker, Malone, & Lane, 1988). Adherence to medical regimens and protocols is a major problem in behavior change programs.…”
