Improving Case-Based Reasoning Systems by Combining K-Nearest Neighbour Algorithm with Logistic Regression in the Prediction of Patients’ Registration on the Renal Transplant Waiting List

Abstract: IntroductionCase-based reasoning (CBR) is an emerging decision making paradigm in medical research where new cases are solved relying on previously solved similar cases. Usually, a database of solved cases is provided, and every case is described through a set of attributes (inputs) and a label (output). Extracting useful information from this database can help the CBR system providing more reliable results on the yet to be solved cases.ObjectiveWe suggest a general framework where a CBR system, viz. K-Nearest… Show more

“…The level of interest could be gauged by the increase in publication on this topic in recent years ( Figure 2 ). Fifteen studies of 22 were journal publications [ 16 , 17 , 19 , 21 , 23 , 25 , 26 , 30 , 32 , 33 , 36 , 37 , 39 , 40 , 42 , 43 ] and seven were conference articles [ 24 , 27 - 29 , 34 , 41 ].…”

“…Most of the studies proposed an arbitrary list of predictors or limited their work to the available predictors, but selected predictors must be representative of patient’s condition in each particular application. Two studies [ 26 , 30 ] employed weighting schemes to adjust the importance of the predictors based on the outcome. One study [ 34 ] showed that predictors selected by a correlation-based feature algorithm could vary according to gender.…”

“…Campillo-Gimenez, Jouini, Bayat and Cuggia [22] used a medical decision-making method the modern case-based reasoning (CBR) technique. This method requires the help of a database of historical records to predict the patients' waiting list; but their work is limited, and does not consider the effective distribution of organs to the recipient during an emergency.…”
