“…Interestingly, the ACC levels were depressed in the tolerant LcHp rootstocks, which showed increased growth under low-P. These ACC responses in contrasting rootstocks under low-P were similar to those observed under low-K (Martínez-Andújar et al, 2016), and under non-stress conditions in hydroponics (Cantero-Navarro et al, 2016), suggesting that ethylene-precursor is a constitutive or stress-induced root-to-shoot negative signal regulating shoot growth.…”

“…This was associated with the improved ability of luffa roots to sense changes in root-zone moisture, leading to a modest level of upward ABA transfer (Liu et al, 2016). Cantero-Navarro et al (2016) observed that rootstock-mediated ABA was positively correlated with scion photosynthetic parameters and instantaneous WUE. However, ethylene precursor 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) was negatively correlated with leaf growth and water use, but did not limit fruit yield.…”

“…This causes heavy and economically relevant yield losses (Altunlu and Gul, 2012; Liu et al, 2014). Thus, it is a considerable challenge to develop scientific strategies for minimizing yield losses under drought conditions (Cantero-Navarro et al, 2016), to increase water use efficiency (WUE) of crops. WUE is defined as the ratio of the CO 2 assimilation rate and transpiration rate (instantaneous WUE), or the ratio of crop yield over the applied water (yield WUE).…”

“…The present study aimed to examine the growth, photosynthesis, photosynthetic pigments, fluorescence, water use efficiency and non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs) of different grafting combinations under well-watered and drought stress conditions. The physiological characteristics and stress resistance of grafted plants are mainly influenced by the rootstock, as proved in many previous studies (Cantero-Navarro et al, 2016;Penella et al, 2016;Warschefsky et al, 2016;Huang et al, 2016). Therefore, we hypothesized that: (i) under well-watered conditions, P. cathayana scion grafting combinations have a better growth, and under drought stress conditions, S. rehderiana-rooted grafting combinations have a stronger resistance to drought stress; (ii) grafting can improve the drought resistance of Salicaceae plants, and grafting a P. cathayana scion onto a S. rehderiana rootstock provides the best survival under drought stress.…”

“…Since drought causes serious economic losses, researchers have used conventional or molecular approaches to develop new varieties with drought tolerance or resistance (Kasuga et al, 1999;Zhou et al, 2013;Kumar et al, 2014). As one of the most ancient horticultural techniques, grafting continues being applied to many plant production questions, including improved drought resistance or water use efficiency of plants (Cantero-Navarro et al, 2016).…”
