Improving a pavement-watering method on the basis of pavement surface temperature measurements

Abstract: Published in Urban ClimatePavement-watering has been studied since the 1990's and is currently considered a promising tool for urban heat island reduction and climate change adaptation. However, possible future water resource availability problems require that water consumption be optimized. Although pavement heat flux can be studied to improve pavement-watering methods (frequency and water consumption), these measurements are costly and require invasive construction work to install appropriate sensors in a de… Show more

“…Temperatures obtained with this experimental setup compare favorably with other laboratory-scale experiments as well as field observations conducted on an asphalt road structure in Paris over the summer of 2013 under similar weather conditions [8], [17], [18], [37]. In the field, for a pavement area receiving only 4.5 hours of direct sunlight per day and daily maximum air temperature of 35°C, pavement temperatures reached up to 55°C at the surface and 45°C 5 cm deep.…”

“…the temperatures in downtown areas are significantly higher than in the suburbs) and the problem is becoming increasingly serious [63,64]. Heat island brings adverse effects on the urban environment in various aspects, such as an increase of energy demand for cooling, which leads to more air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions, lowered groundwater quality, and endangerment of urban biodiversity and human health [65,66].…”
