Improvements to the Eurocode 2 shrinkage model for concrete using a large experimental database

Abstract: Shrinkage plays an important, sometimes crucial, role in the design of many types of concrete structures as well as in their behaviour after construction. However, the uncontrolled strains are often larger than the expected values. As a matter of fact, there is as yet no perfectly satisfactory physical explanation for shrinkage. In this work, a large database has been set up for shrinkage testing performed by several research centres in Europe. On the basis of the statistical analysis of this database and by o… Show more

“…When concrete is subjected to a sustained load, time‐dependent strains due to creep and shrinkage develop with a considerable impact on the performance of the structural member. The importance of creep and shrinkage in reinforced concrete beams is well recognized . Over its lifetime, the local strain within a cross section can attain values several times larger than the initial elastic strain, and this can cause undesired serviceability problems in structural members where deflections or crack widths are excessive .…”

Abschn. 3.4.4).…”

“…The Eurocode 2 model [19] is one of the most widely used models for predicting shrinkage and creep. Based on a large experimental database, the EC2 shrinkage model has been updated [23], and correction coefficients have also been proposed for the Eurocode 2 creep model [24] but the calculation of these correction coefficients are limited for a specific condition of initial time loading, relative humidity, or compressive strength. For that, it is necessary to improve the creep coefficient prediction by taking into consideration the different concrete mix compositions and the various environmental conditions.…”
