Improvements in spectral wave modeling in tidal inlet seas

Abstract: [1] The performance of the spectral wind wave model SWAN in tidal inlet seas was assessed on the basis of extensive wave measurements conducted in the Amelander Zeegat tidal inlet and the Dutch Eastern Wadden Sea, as well as relevant data from other inlets, lakes, estuaries and beaches. We found that the 2006 default SWAN model (version 40.51), the starting point of the investigation, performed reasonably well for measured storm conditions, but three aspects required further attention. First, over the near-hor… Show more

“…In shallow coastal areas, tidal effects may become critical in reproducing the conditions as currents, depth limitations and water levels lead to small scale variations in time and space of the wave field (Van der Westhuysen et al 2012;Ardhuin et al 2012). Especially in areas where waves are depth-limited any error in computational depth, i.e.…”

“…This paper has an apparent connection to the topic of rogue waves mentioned above. Three other papers deal with wave‐current interactions, that is effectively with coupling the traditional wave modeling with models of other phenomena in the ocean Van der Westhuysen et al [2012] Roland et al [2012]…”

“…The computations presented here were performed using the SWAN model version 40.72ABCDE, in stationary third-generation mode. The physical settings are similar as those in Van der Westhuysen et al (2012). The grid size is 0.10 m. For details about the model set-up, see Groeneweg et al (2014).…”

“…Over the last couple of years significant improvements in the wave modeling with SWAN have been made (see e.g. Van der Westhuysen et al, 2012, Zijlema et al, 2012. One of the remaining issues is the underestimation by SWAN of the penetration of North Sea swell waves, in the range of 0.03 -0.20 Hz, under storm conditions.…”
