Improvement of γ-ray energy resolution of LaBr3:Ce3+ scintillation detectors by Sr2+ and Ca2+ co-doping

Abstract: Commercially available LaBr3:5% Ce3+ scintillators show with photomultiplier tube readout about 2.7% energy resolution for the detection of 662 keV γ-rays. Here we will show that by co-doping LaBr3:Ce3+ with Sr2+ or Ca2+ the resolution is improved to 2.0%. Such an improvement is attributed to a strong reduction of the scintillation light losses that are due to radiationless recombination of free electrons and holes during the earliest stages (1–10 ps) inside the high free charge carrier density parts of the io… Show more

“…Recently, LaBr 3 :5%Ce co-doped with Sr showed a record low energy resolution of 2% at 662 keV. 11 This improvement was ascribed to a more proportional response of LaBr 3 :5%Ce, Sr as compared to standard LaBr 3 :5% Ce. 11 Yang et al 12 also observed light yield, energy resolution, and proportionality improvements of Sr and Ba codoped LaBr 3 :5%Ce crystals.…”

“…In Ref. 11, we showed that the electron response is remarkably more proportional in LaBr 3 :Ce,Sr as compared to standard LaBr 3 :Ce. This results in a much smaller contribution of R nPR and an improved energy resolution in LaBr 3 :Ce,Sr.…”

“…46,47 Incorporation of 100 ppm of Sr 2þ , a charged impurity with z ¼ 1, resulted in a large improvement of the photon-nPR that brings energy resolution of LaBr 3 to 2% at 662 keV which is almost at the theoretical limit shown in Fig. 2.…”

“…9 Lately, codoping of scintillators has also proven to be a successful route to improved scintillation properties. [10][11][12][13][14] Unfortunately, the complex physics underlying the energy resolution of scintillators presently is still only understood at a qualitative level. Better fundamental, quantitative insight is needed, to enable targeted materials design for scintillators.…”
